It's a fact that they leap or breach for reasons beyond playfulness including communication, and hunting, energy conservation, and parasite removal.

The acrobatic jumps help them locate food from above, socialize, and travel faster by reducing water resistance.

All the leaping allows them to spot schools of fish from above and upon re-entry and a herd fish into tighter groups for easier feeding.
